Please explain how this math works -

I rarely take any time off, but last week I ventured down to a nearby lake with my sweetheart. One night we ate dinner at the marina and took a stroll on the dock.

I noticed a new wakeboard/wake surf boat that looked similar to the one I bought back in 2001. I was really into wakeboarding for about 6-7 years and spent a lot of time on the water. Super fun days that I really miss.

I asked what it was going for. The guy said, "Oh, it's $177,000" off-handedly.

Wait...

What did he just say? 😯

Wait...

Did he just say $177,000 for a 21" ski boat? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

I was so shocked, I had no words. To put it in context, I paid $35,000 in 2001 for a comparable 21" Malibu Wakesetter. Actually, mine was a higher tier brand than the one I was looking at. Yes, I understand that was 20 years ago, and yes it had a few more bells and whistles than mine, but still. $177,000??

I was so bent out of shape about it the rest of the trip my girlfriend at one point said, "Would you please stop talking about that boat?"

And look at the prices on this picture -
A new Mastercraft, slightly bigger 23", is selling for $260,000??????????
A USED Centurion for $163,000????

How does this math work? Are people insane??

Now I get it if you are a big time surgeon or you sold a business and made a bunch of money. Sure, park that Mastercraft right beside your Aston Martin and rock on.

Of course, there are some people that can afford this, but how many can that be? These kind of boats were all over the lake.

I don't get it. I don't see how it's possible for even an upper middle class family to afford something like this.

Here's another little anecdote for you. I was at Whole Foods one day talking to the cashier. It was raining and the place was dead. I mentioned I didn't mind coming out and getting a little wet on the walk in.

The cashier said that surprised her because somebody has just ordered a loaf of bread and a kombucha for about $7. However, they paid a $23 delivery fee to DoorDash to bring it to them.

Huh? Does this make any sense? How does this math work???? I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone.

Please feel free to comment and leave your own nuggets like this. I'm sure there are a ton of them. 😵‍💫
